I first heard of Asking Alexandria from a Revolver Magazine article with Sebastian Bach. Shortly after that, I saw them play with Bas at the Golden Gods Awards. I wouldn’t see them again until a couple years ago when I saw them twice on the Black Tour. They are currently on the Resurrection Tour and I caught up with them at the Myth Nightclub in Maplewood, MN.
Opening with the second track on their latest S/T release “Into The Fire”, the fifteen song set would feature no less than six songs from their new record. And obviously with the return of singer Danny Worsnop, no songs from 2016’s The Black featuring the now departed singer Denis Stoff. Danny could not be a more different lead singer than castoff Denis. Frankly, he couldn’t be more different than any of his peers. Few singers seem as in the moment. He is playful and charismatic as he controls the stage.
That playful side came out during the acoustic break in the middle of the set with “Someone, Somewhere”, Ben Bruce encountered some technical difficulties getting his guitar to feed through the PA. Danny used this time to engage the audience in some banter and shenanigans. Once they got it sorted out it was a highlight of the evening.
At the song’s conclusion the rest of the band came out and they stormed through three more songs off the latest release (“Eve”, “Where Did It Go” and “Alone In A Room”) before playing “A Prophecy” and exiting the stage. Returning of course for the obligatory encore where they played “Moving On” and “The Death of Me” before leaving the stage for good. Asking Alexandria is rounded out by guitarist Cameron Liddel, bassist Sam Bettley and one of metal’s best drummers James Cassells.
