It has got to that point in the calendar where some of the most interesting announcements are made. Bands that hardly anyone knows outside of perhaps their home towns but have lots to offer. Bands which could well be your new favorite band. That is always an exciting possibility at any festival which allows new blood and particularly at Bloodstock Metal Fest where the bands have worked hard through several grueling rounds of Metal 2 The Masses the name of their “battle of the bands” for those who wish a chance to play at metal’s premium event in the UK. Looking at what all the bands have to say about getting there the word that comes through is “opportunity” with each band stating how much they want to put on a performance to remember at a festival that many of their members have attended.  Let us go through the bands announced so far…

Saturday Hobgoblin New Blood Stage

Djinovawinners of the Coventry heats. Their list of influences include such diverse names as Whitechapel, Hatebreed, Pantera, Primus and Rush, and from the couple of songs I have heard the latter two probably account for the interest in time changes. Their stuff is nice and heavy but has clever touches of mood and pace to make it nicely varied and interesting. You can check out their new track “Scapegoat” below.

Inferiem were winners in Glasgow. The band comes from a small town just outside of there called Motherwell.  They name check GhostAvenged SevenfoldKillswitch Engage and Alter Bridge. They have a new single out called “The Fall” which is worth checking out. The band are excited as they have never played outside of the Glasgow area before so this will be a very new experience for them!

Deformation Of Man won through in Sheffield. They describe themselves as “heavy grooved based” and namecheck artists like DevildriverLamb Of God and Chimaira. They formed away back in 2007 but had a long hiatus due to guitarist Stef Booyens taking seriously ill. The good news is that he has now got the all clear so the band are back and are just waiting on the release of their third album Rebirth Of Chaos later this year. Oh, and the bassist apparently can sing Mother Love Bone songs. I need to drink with that man!

Master’s Call from the Black Country have been hand-picked by the festival organizers on the strength of their CD submission. Their bio mentions the words “chaos, hell, horror” and “darkness” which gives an idea of what they sound like. Their EP Morbid Black Trinity has had good reviews and marks from the main rock and metal magazines as well as various websites. They will bring dark black metal (along with Yorkshire tea and biscuits apparently for the crew) to Bloodstock.

Sunday Hobgoblin New Blood Stage:

AeSect won the Dublin M2TM and list influences such as The HauntedMeshuggah and Gojira amongst others. They have a couple of EPs available and a brand new single called “Blind Faith”. They are a 5-piece who formed back in 2011 but have gone through some line-up changes but are ready to take the next step by playing Bloodstock.

Bastard came out top in Norwich. They describe what they do as “aggro hardcore” and point to bands such as Every Time I DieGallows and Cancer Bats (who play the festival on the Saturday Dio Stage). They have a couple of singles and an EP available with the latest called “Reaper” which has a touch of Metallica in one of the riffs.

Take Refuge came through successfully in Milton Keynes heats. This 5-piece play a mix of death, groove, thrash and metalcore. They claim to play music that will cause you to “bang your head and throw shapes”. I might do the former as not so sure I could come out unscathed doing the latter! They used to be called Xyhon and have a new guitarist in Arran

28 Double came through the Leicester heats and say their influences include Alter BridgeClutchDown, Black Stone Cherry. They have a more commercial feel about them but still have some heavy grooves going on. The band says that they are fans of the festival with some of them having attended as far back as when Bloodstock was an indoor event. From their photos, I think they must have been pretty bloody young at the time!

There will be plenty more bands to come as the heats and finals are still going on around the country. Keep your eyes peeled for the next batch.

Of course, these are all the undercard to artists such as headliners Rotting ChristSabaton, Grand MagusParkway DriveTaakeScorpions and Eluveitie. Other notables include Powerwolf, Queensryche, Children  Of Bodom,  AnthraxDimmu BorgirSoulflyDee Snider and Death Angel among many others.

Day tickets come out 9am Thursday 30 May priced at £65 (plus fees) for adults and £20 for children between 4 and 11. These will be limited so if you only wish to attend one day then it would be a good idea to order soon as possible. Weekend tickets are £152 for adults and £39 for kids 4 to 11.
