DARE – Out Of The Silence II (Album Review)

DARE – Bio

Dare are probably best known for their singer/songwriter Darren Wharton.  He first rose to fame in the early eighties playing keyboards with legendary Irish rock band Thin Lizzy.  In addition, their former keyboard player was the respected academic/tv personality Professor Brian Cox.

The band’s debut 1988 album Out Of The Silence was recorded at Joni Mitchell’s Bel Air Studio in Los Angeles.  It was also produced by famed producer Mike Shipley.  Although released thirty years ago, it is still widely regarded today as one of the all time great AOR albums.  Count me among those who believe this to be gospel.

2018 promises to be another great chapter in the book of Dare, as the band celebrate their 30yr Anniversary with a Special Edition re-release of their debut classic album.

Out Of The Silence II has been completely re-recorded and, in Wharton’s own words, “has taken on a new life”.  The new recording has been timed to be released for the band’s European tour.

DARE – Out Of The Silence II (Legend Records)

The record steps out of the silence(ahem) with the legendary song “Abandon“.  I love the eighties and this song epitomises the time for me – big, brassy and bold!  Wharton still sings with melody and fire and his world-weary lyrics check all the heart boxes.

The whole collection of songs are still world class, as they were in 1988.  They light their own way in a well worn genre and Wharton‘s voice will always be his alone.  The tunes reflect every emotion known.   It is a whirlwind journey.

Dare craft complete short epics, very much like Magnum and never lose sight of melody.  The guitars blaze when needed and the keyboards complement rather than overpower.  Favorite songs include the Phil Lynott tribute of “King Of Spades” and “Raindance“.

King Of Spades” is notable for its extended passage of the Thin Lizzy classic “Emerald“.  This is ten times greater than Ace Frehley’s version, that is for sure!

Final Thoughts

I loved the original album and still love his version!  If you don’t know Dare, dare to try something different!
