Dark Mourning bandEver since I took an interest in rock and heavy metal music I have looked for the next band that really, for lack of a better way to describe it, gets into my head. To my surprise, I was given this opportunity to check out this new band out of Winnipeg, Canada called Dark Mourning. I know what your thinking, cool name but can they deliver? I am here to say, Yes they can!

The three song EP kicks off with the song “Devour”. When I hear a band for the first time I try to listen without trying to judge. Just listening. Wow, this song grabbed me and would not let go! The song starts with a heavy guitar riff that just makes you want to start head banging right away. Then the voice kicks in and for me, that instantly won me over. Catchy lyrics, a nice hook and the guitar solo that isn’t what you expect. While it may not break new ground it’s something different from what I have been hearing lately. After hearing the first song I could not wait to see what else these guys have in store for my ears.

“Ghost in the Shadow”, the second song, kicks off right where “Devour” left off.  A killer opening guitar riff that gets you going. Busting right into the lyrics. Again for me the song just sucks you into a great groove and does not let go. I’m not going to get into what the song is about because everyone will feel a different way. For me, I can relate to what the song is about. That’s another key for me. Can I connect? The guitar solo is another bright spot. I feel like the band took some time to create something that not only sounded good but had that feeling behind it. Too often I hear bands that are afraid to just let it rip. Both of these songs do it very well.

dark mourning cd“11 Years” the third and final song that was sent off this 2015 released EP which actually contains 5 tracks. Again the song kicks in with a great chugging riff, but with some cool effects thrown in. Then slows a bit to a slow burn. The lyrics kick off and go from a spoken whisper to a thundering growl. The bass kicks in and the song starts to ramp up the intensity. The chorus is another sing along that I can’t seem to shake out of my head.  The guitar solo for me is another with a lot of feeling and depth. It makes use of some nice effects in the back round.

I was not sure what I should expect going into this EP. I can tell you one thing is for sure. From the opening note of “Devour”, I was hooked. Usually, it takes a lot more to get me to that point. I liked it so much that I headed right over to iTunes and bought the EP. I highly recommend checking Dark Mourning out. The music is fun, not so serious. This band has a bright future ahead of them.
