Dwarfs golf - CopyAs nervous as I was when the day approached I was also excited beyond belief, I knew it would be a great day! Turns out that it more than exceeded my expectations. I’m speaking of the KiLLeR DWaRfS Rock Against Hunger Charity Golf Tournament on September 24, 2015. The Canadian heavy metallers decided to host this event to support the “Feed the Need in Durham” food bank, joining them in the fight against hunger.

Dwarf on Golf_team Decibel GeekDecibel Geek jumped on board right away as we put together a golfing foursome and with a couple of roster changes along the way we solidified our lineup just a few days prior to the event. To lessen the embarrassment factor Decibel Geeks Kate Campbell (never having golfed a day in her life) and Rich “The Meister” Dillon (having only golfed once over 20 years ago) were joined by two friends and experienced golfers, Al and Mark, one a DWaRfS fan who had travelled to see them at M3 Festival as well (Meister’s M3 2015 Part #2). Feeling the need to express ourselves ala Caddyshack and Happy Gilmore Kate took care of team shirts for us, deeming to the printer that they be as loud and obnoxious as possible. On the back we had printed a slogan developed by Decibel Geek Wallygator Norton, who sadly was one of the early roster casualties, “Outta my way I’m playin’ through”, a play on the DWaRfS song lyric, “Outta my way I’m comin’ through”! The day started with good humour all around, albeit with some strange looks from the “regular” golfers as Mark and I showed up before Kate (who was in possession of our “proper attire” shirts). I guess the heavy metal t-shirts were not a hit with the normal golf crowd!

Dwarf on Golf-tean Decibel Geek 2The bar was open and with a BBQ lunch underway during the registration, spirits and excitement were raising even higher as we took to the power carts to begin our round of golf. I should mention that Al and Mark, probably quite wisely, prevented Kate and I from power cart operations! Our team’s starting hole would be #4 and how fitting it was that hole #4 be the Decibel Geek sponsored hole! Two holes later as our team was sitting at a par score, hole six had been commandeered by a Pirate! KiLLeR DWaRfS drummer Darrell Millar, who would not be actually golfing today had built his impressive drum rig under a tent near hole six and was posing for photos with all fans and golfers. When else are you gonna sit behind a drum kit for a photo with one of the most thunderous in the business and on a golf course no less! Expert photographer Sue Hebert Sadzak snapped each fans photos as the laughs and good spirits soared. We were golfing fairly quickly and so we even had time, at my encouragement I might add, for Millar to try his hand at driving a ball off the tee. The other members of the DWaRfS were, of course on hand for the event as guitarist Gerry Finn and bassist Johnny Fenton belonged to the foursome directly ahead of us, who we had to wait for a couple of time so as not to hit them with our drives, well Al and Mark that is! “Outta my way I’m playin’ through!”. DWaRf frontman Russ Graham was in the foursome behind us that also included The Reverend Luc Carl and DWaRfS manager, Rob. Perhaps that foursome are the troublemakers over ours even! Professional photographer Mike was also on hand with his own golf power cart zipping around and documenting the whole event on film as golfers made their shots on various holes throughout the afternoon.

The day’s end brought an excellently tasty banquet dinner and Luc Carl took on the role of MC for the prize giveaways in a great end to a great day. I was nervous about golfing as that time over 20 years ago I had hated my experience, but I’m proud to say that thanks to my team, The KiLLeR DWaRfS and everyone involved or participating, I’m already more than stoked for next year’s event! I issue the challenge to my friends and DWaRf fans alike across the world to attend this great event and extremely fun day next year!

A statement on the DWaRf Facebook Page summed it all up beautifully: “Wow! What a great day we had on the course for our first annual “Rock Against Hunger” Charity Golf Tournament this past Thursday. It was a great day all around seeing old friends and making many new ones as well as raising money for a great cause. This definitely would not be possible without the support of our sponsors and private donations. There is no doubt that there will be another one next year and our team is already in the process of organizing and reserving the day. Details will be posted soon! Thank you to all the friends that travelled from far and wide from across the USA and Canada to participate in this inaugural event. Thank you Lüc Carl for being an awesome MC and taking time out of your busy schedule. Special thanks go to Lisa Clifford and Tony Geraci for all the long hours spent organizing and making this day a total success. Thanks again to all who participated. See you next year!”

Here’s a little video I created of some of team Decibel Geek‘s escapades from the event:
