Movie review: Scooby Doo and KISS Rock and Roll Mystery

Scooby Doo and KISS

Why not revisit the Scooby Doo and KISS gang’s getting back together for the first time in decades, we will get this reunion before any other and I am OK with that! Not to mention they all seem to get along (wink wink).

If you are the KISS fan that only wants music and a show, the originals and nothing else matters, good on you. This is really for the KISS fan that consumes about everything the brand has become. I fall somewhere in the middle. I don’t own the KISS coffin, but I do have plenty of KISS K’nex which is exactly what my son and I picked up this movie. We get to enjoy it together.

It is a simple story, shocking I know, similar to Phantom of The Park in fact. It is about the only time you will hear the band mutter The Elder positively, sadly. There are some good laughs and the animation is fun. There is plenty for KISS fans to digest and the music interludes, I assume done by the band are some fine snippets. Some of the classics sound re-recorded to me and that is fun to hear, maybe another method to sell “new” stuff. The silliest song “Don’t Touch My Ascot” is fun. Get over yourself, as a KISS fan, if you think this is anything other than them poking fun at themselves, and Fred’s ascot. Not to be taken seriously by any means. In fact, both my son and I have been singing the song for a week now, catchy little ditty!

The villain; The Crimson Witch is a formidable one and I was glad to see The Spaceman and The Catman get plenty of screen/line time too. Gene, as is customary when playing The Demon comes across as grumpy, which is what my son asked why he sounds like that. Having met and spoken to the actual man behind the paint it wasn’t what he recalled at all. Funny!

There are some extras on the DVD/Blu-Ray which I haven’t checked out yet: Are You A Scooby or a Shaggy and a Blooper Reel.

Is it worth watching, for sure it is. As a grown man, I still enjoy cartoons! Throw KISS in there and it is a 90 minute or so relaxation of laughs with some good music!
