CORRUPT THE SYSTEM LIVE!
Young Glasgow rockers and thrashers Corrupt The System came to Edinburgh Opium as part of their very first UK tour! They also took time out to have a brief chat with us here at Decibel Geek before the show, of which there will be more about soon on this site!
Having come across them a few months ago supporting Edinburgh based band Perpetua in the G2 in Glasgow I was very keen to catch up with them doing a headline set. (Review of the support slot from February can be found at www.decibelgeek.com/wordpress/perpetua-glasgow-concert-review/).
Despite some technical problems, with an engineer running about sorting things at times, they played really well and put on a show. As I previously mentioned, they are thrash band. You can tell they are from their choices of favourite bands and albums from the interview coming soon. However, they have plenty of melody and groove with some fine songs. Most of which are accessible and easy to either head bang or sing along with. Something which happened throughout the set in Opium.
From the very first song ”Chaos Reigns” to the last, the particularly excellent “Temptations Of Anarchy“, they had plenty of light and shade. Allied to this were songs fast and slow, with quality guitar work and some amazing bass work again from Gary Hughes. He wasably assisted by the dexterity mixed with powerful drumming from Adam Mc Sherry,making a strong rhythm section. This allowed both frontman and guitarist Neil Parkinson, along with lead guitarist backing vocalist Paul McAllister, to focus on their solos and harmonics.
The band seem particularly good at bringing things down in songs so nothing becomes repetitive (which can often happen to thrash based bands). This was most noticeable on “Dehumanised” and “Left For Dead” which Neil said hadn’t been played for a while. Didn’t show! The bass section leading into an echo sounding guitar solo which then led into twin guitar solo was delicious. This was probably the closest song or moment where they have a “Master Of Puppets” Metallica moment. Great execution of the song.
There was a bit of a delay where Neil “talked shite for a while” (his own words not mine) before they played “Clay Soldiers” which is possibly my favourite song by them. My comment typed on my phone comments wise was just “tremendous!” Thinking back, it was.
They played one brand new song called (I believe) “Struggle”, which was a little funky (blame the bassist? No don’t!) and a bit different from all the other songs written so far. Still kicked, but had some very sweet bass lines in it. Sounded promising, good to see a band stretching out and trying things.
There were also moments of fun and banter with quite a bit of heckling going on along with a charming plea to help out and buy some of their merchandise so they can actually afford to get home at the end of the tour.
My conclusion to this is very much what I said last time, “Good stuff all round”. Get out and see them if they are near you in the future.
