5 Star HookerA band’s name is a very important part of the experience for me as is the logo for their moniker. Sometimes these things just don’t gel. As a result, it can leave a bad taste in your mouth before you’ve even swallowed the meal. I’ve heard some fantastic bands with awful names and vice versa. I know that the music should stand for itself, but it’s all a part of the total package for me. In some instances, the stars align perfectly and the whole thing matches up in every aspect.  5 Star Hooker, a band from Tampa, Florida that I discovered at Rocklahoma this year on the Retrospect Stage definitely fits that perfect mold. The name 5 Star Hooker to me just screams glam/sleaze, hard party rock. That’s what you’ll get from this band…..and they do it well.

I saw them during two sets at the 2016 Rocklahoma festival. On the campground stage dubbed Camp Jager on the very first night was the first time. By the time that 5 Star Hooker hit the flatbed trailer that served as the Camp stage, I was well into the party mode (my American friends had even found me some sweet Canadian Moosehead beer for outside festival grounds consumption). From my drunken recollections, I thought that they were pretty good. Good enough that I especially made a point to catch their next set on The Retrospect Stage.

5 Star HookerFor the next set, I seemed to be in a little better condition, therefore paying more attention. Although not too much since there was free beer in the VIP tent after all! I can definitely tell you this. Their cover of Accept‘s “Balls to the Wall”, one of my all-time favorite bands and favorite songs (even if the lyrics are a little fucked), was fantastic. 5 Star Hooker embodied the total sleaze of the Sunset Strip movement of the 80’s with their original tunes. The vocalist even reminded me a little of Axl Rose on some scores.

A brief Facebook chat with guitarist Michael Hatcher informed me that the band had only been together for a couple of months. While I failed in acquiring the 5 Star Hooker CD at the festival, thanks to Hatcher, it’s on its way up to my Canadian home as we speak. From what I’ve heard over on their ReverbNation channel, it sounds great and I’m looking forward to spinning it! I’ll get a little 5 Star Hooker album review up in the coming weeks, but most of all you need to grab a stack of cash, your best blow and get into this 5 Star Hooker video from Rocklahoma 2016!
