BRAINSTORM – Midnight Ghost (Album Review)

BRAINSTORM – Bio

Brainstorm were founded in Germany in 1989 by Torsten Ihlenfeld, Milan Loncaric and drummer Dieter Bernert. The first years saw the band build a solid groundwork with several demo releases and live appearances.

In 1997, Brainstorm signed their first record deal.  The self-produced Hungry album was released and a year later the band was back in the studio to record their second album Unholy.

A European tour with Iced Earth followed before Brainstorm added new vocalist Andy B. Franck to the band´s ranks. The third album Ambiguity was released shortly after and received critical acclaim.

October 2001 saw the release of Metus Mortis, which would become their international breakthrough.  In 2003, Soul Temptation was unleashed, an album that further increased the band´s support. Chart entries in numerous European countries followed.  Several other albums were released, including Liquid Monster and the hugely successful Firesoul.

Midnight Ghost is released on AFM Records at the end of September 2018 and is another hard-hitting slice of European Power Metal, produced by the master himself, Seeb Levermann (Orden Ogan, Rhapsody Of Fire). The cover artwork was created by Gyula Havancsak (Annihilator, Stratovarius).

BRAINSTORM – Midnight Ghost

The record has a classic European Metal sound, with tonnes of guitar and copious amounts of melody.  I am not sure it is a huge progression from previous releases, but it does stick in your memory with the doubled vocals and chimes that are so evocative of Orden Ogan (obviously, due its producer).

The tracks blaze along, leaving scorch marks on your turntable.  There are mega singalongs, such as “The Pyre” and the amazing “Ravenous Minds“.  There are stompers such as “Four Blessings” and there are softer moments with “Jeanne Boulet“.

The production is modern and warm sounding.  The drumming of Dieter Bernert is rather effective.  The singing is very cool.  A good album, but maybe a touch more diversity would have sent it to the same stratosphere as Firesoul.
