The Worlds Loudest Monthis just a few weeks away. For those of us in the North Star state and surrounding area that means a trek to Somerset, Wisconsin for the second Annual Northern Invasion May 14th and 15th at the Somerset Ampitheater. The follow up to the 2015 sold out event has been expanded to two days. This year’s lineup features plenty of heavy hitters like Disturbed, Rob Zombie, Korn, and Shinedown. And while you know you’re going to be there when those bands take the stage, I would also encourage you to get there early for some amazing bands you may not be as familiar with. Here are my picks for five bands you don’t want to miss.
Monster Truck. One of the funnest bands to come out recently Monster Truck is just straight up ball swinging rock. A bit stoner rock, a bit southern rock. And from Ontario dontcha know. If for some reason you don’t find yourself enjoying their set there’s a chance you don’t like Rock music.
Avatar. The Swedish metallers have been on the scene for over a decade yet just recently started making US audiences perk up. With a new album, Feathers and Flesh, coming out the day before Northern Invasion, Avatar will be touring the US all of May. Don’t skip your chance to see them at NI.
Baby Metal. Nothing like a little metal infused J-Pop to break up the day. The three girls from Japan have had the metal community on its toes since they burst on the scene a few years ago. You’re going to want a good seat when they take the stage. For curiosity if nothing else.
Red Sun Rising. When a friend of mine saw these guys on the bill he told me I need to check them out. Right away. I’m quite glad I did and so will you be. They have a touch of Alice In Chains to their sound. I’m quite fond of the song “The Otherside”. Hailing from Akron, Ohio they are worth getting up early for.
The Glorious Sons. Canada has quite a track record of great bands. Glorious Sons may be the latest reason to take a trip to the Great White North. “Sometimes On A Sunday” has been making repeat appearances on my personal playlist. They like to say they are the everyman band, with a passion for portraying the lost romance of liquor, women and rock and roll. What more could you want?
So there you have my five must-see bands at the 2016 Northern Invasion. But with 40 bands over two days the five I listed are surrounded by enough rock and metal to gratify any taste. The point being don’t sleep in on the early acts. You’ll only miss out. And if you’re camping, and why wouldn’t you be, remember to pack shorts and a parka. Sunscreen and a rain poncho. The weather can be a bit fickle in these parts early in May. And if you haven’t got your tickets what are you waiting for? You can find them at Northern Invasion’s official site. See you there. Horns UP!
