spiders_epWhy Don’t You get a piece of this Swedish sleaze band from Gothenburg?  Spiders‘ latest EP is three songs deep of dope decibel debauchery.  Like Swedish compatriots Deadheads, this four piece know how to rock with a nod to the past and an eye on the future.  The band is made up of Ann-Sofie Hoyles (vocals), John Hoyles (guitar), Olle Griphammar (bass) and Ricard Harryson (drums).

Spiders was formed in February 2010. A few months later, the band appeared at one of Sweden’s most successful music festivals, Way Out West.  By the end of January 2011, Spiders released their debut EP, which was well received and in March 2011 those four previously released tracks came to be released in the USA as two separate 7” singles.  In October 2012, the debut album, Flash Point, was released and was backed by a European tour together with Graveyard.

This latest ball of wax sounds like Iggy and the Stooges mixed with early Blondie, shaken with a dash of Aussie rockers Rose Tatoo.  Opener “Why Don’t You” stomps like the Incredible Hulk trying to crush a tank.  Rock solid guitars and bass underpin the groove and I love Ann-Sofie‘s vocals, sneering with attitude that Lzzy Hale would kill for.  It certainly is a manifesto statement and a great barometer for the rest of the EP.

Watch Out” is an ABBA cover that rocks out in a way that the pop greats could never emulate.  From the ringing guitar and tasteful keyboard backing, the song is class and again the vocals are excellent.  I will never think of ABBA the same way!  It has a Glam Rock sound that has been updated to a modern shine that moves the listener back and forth in time…very cool.

The EP closes out with “In A Room“, which blusters with mouth organ and attitude.  The vocals remind listeners of the CGBG-era BlondieDebbie Harry sounding well hacked off!  The guitar solo is cranked out in a memorable flash and bang!  The EP ends with another blasting solo and Hoyles‘s gravel vocals sipping on whiskey like a thirsty man in Dry Country…A great EP with buckets of swagger.
