Why Arrive Thursday for Bloodstock?

Without a doubt getting to Bloodstock Metal Festival on the Thursday (this year August 9) is a very good idea not only to pitch up your tent, meet your neighbours and get settled in ready for the first (main) day of the festival, but also to enjoy some fine entertainment put on by Bloodstock organisers. During the years there has been comedy and music in the Sophie (tent) stage and this year is no different. For 2018 Thursday night they have announced 5 bands from the UK, Russia and Argentina to get us all in the party mood!

The 5 Bands Announced

Headlining are Russian pagan metal outfit Arkona from Moscow. Featuring not only the usual guitar bass and drums but also violin and flute along with local instruments from their own area/culture making them different from other bands within the genre. Their latest album (their eighth) is called “Khran” (apparently “temple” in English) is out on Napalm Records.

Bloodshot Dawn from Portsmouth started their Bloodstock journey back in 2009 when they won through Metal 2 The Masses to play on the New Blood stage. They payed the Sophie 2009 and the main stage (Dio) in 2014 as first band of the festival. Now they are back second to top on the Sophie. They are death metal but one with a great deal of melody. Their new album “Reanimation” is out now.

Arkona live with fans

The phrase “bringing the bagpipes to Bloodstock” is not one you read every day. The instrument (and band) are not coming from Scotland but from Buenos Aires in Argentina. Known as Skiltron they have playing their folk metal around the world (now including Japan) for about 6 years getting audiences bouncing and dancing wherever they go. Expect a bit of a party vibe when they are on. Their new album is “Legacy Of Blood” which has been out since 2016.

Fire Red Empress are a hard rock/metal band from the UK are also added to the bill for the pre-festival party. They are garnering some fine press from folks in places like Metal Hammer and Planet Rock so look like a band to check out. Their debut album “Black Morphine” came out last year.

Finally opening the evening up are Leeds doomsters Hundred Year Old Man (possibly a description of how I feel after 4 days of camping and rocking at Bloodstock).  Their first album (they also have an EP called “Rei”) “Breaching” is full of brutal riffs, spoken word and atmosphere.

Final Thought

Anyone going to Bloodstock now have 5 good reasons to head down early (along with the obvious of having fun drinking with mates).  Get your tickets now before they go for a great weekend of fun and metal.
