Decibel Geek staff writer Blair DeAbreu recently had the chance to sit down with Brian Vollmer, frontman for Helix, Canada’s biggest heavy metal band (Audio clip appears below). Blair says that sitting down with Brian Vollmer is like having a beer with a buddy you haven’t seen in years but it sure seems comfortable, picking right back up where you left off. It’s refreshing that after 40 years the passion Brian has still burns ferociously for the music business, and every part he has in it which are many as you will hear in the interview. We talk about current projects, Helix, the backstage of how a band works and what it takes to put it all together, his early jump to putting Helix online in the early 1990s, the local London, Ontario, Canada and Southwestern Ontario region and the guys that run the bars bands play in.
After the interview, we spoke at length about his singing style, which he teaches as well. Bel Canto singing style is what allows Brian to sound as great as he does, decades later. Brian is also very outspoken about how the worst day of his life, when he thought he wouldn’t ever sing again, became a blessing in disguise and how he wants to pass the teaching of Bel Canto on. Talk about paying it forward from a guy who has paid his dues in full.
Hope you enjoy listening to this interview and be sure to check out the latest Helix album, Bastard Of The Blues.
