T’was the night before Sweden Rock and all through the town no one was quiet…certainly not The Meister.
Hard to believe that it’s year five! My fifth excursion from Toronto to Solvesborg for Sweden Rock Festival. Perhaps the single greatest music event held on land (nothing beats the floating party that is Monsters of Rock Cruise). Four days, Five stages, over 80 bands, many that will never hit North American soil. Music lovers from around the globe congregate here sharing so much joy with each other.
A lot has changed since that first trip. Much has remained constant. That first voyage very nearly didn’t happen (A Canadian Decibel Geek in Sweden). This fifth journey also came close to failure. I was totally and completely alone in 2012. Now I am meeting friends from Canada, USA, UK, Australia, Brazil, Switzerland and of course, Sweden. I camped in a tent that first year. Now, at great expense I might add, it’s a hotel. I buy a Sweden Rock Festival shirt and lanyard each year and they are among the most prized in my rock memorabilia collection. Known to drink, I am. I rock and roll. Headbang. Buy merchandise. I meet and make friends. Life is perfect in the Sweden Rock grounds.
The band lineup will probably never again see the total greatness of 2013, the year that got me going. But it’s still pretty damn hard to beat! Some big targets are Running Wild, Grand Magus, Great King Rat, Thunder and Art Nation…. And favorites like Helix, Saxon, Grave Digger, Primal Fear, Gotthard, … There will, of course, be many more to discover as well such as Emma Varg, Veonity, VA Rocks, Picture, and Artch.
Decibel GeeksMikael“The Lionsheart”Svensson joins me for the third time. He, of course, has been other times being native to Sweden. Canadian Shawn“Animalize”Irwin in his second Sweden Rock Festival. And newcomer, virgin “Rockin’ Ron”Runyon in all his terrified glory, never having been overseas before. Get ready for this roller coaster ride as we do our best to bring you coverage of the 2017 Sweden Rock Festival. If you’re on site as well, please, by all means, reach out. Shoot us a message, we’d love to meet up for a beverage!
