MetalocalypstickThe second annual Metalocalypstick is set to blow away the myth that heavy metal is a boys only club. Set in scenic Lone Butte, British Columbia, the two-day outdoor music festival, Metalocalypstick Fest, takes place on the weekend of July 1-2 and celebrates the place of females in the genre of heavy metal.

The year’s line-up features more than 15 bands ranging from punk to folk metal and everything in between. Bands must have at least one female member and festival organizer and Kaija Kinney, recently told The Vernon Morning Star; “There really is something for everyone here, and a chance to broaden your taste in music. Though we scaled back on our headliners this year, we did not scale back on the level of talent. We are super excited for all the bands playing. There will be some bands that blew us away last year returning and some amazing new talent from across the globe”. Scheduled to appear at this year’s festival are bands from across Canada and around the world including names such as Anarcheon (Vancouver, BC.), Cabrakaan (Toluca, Mexico), Sovereign Council (Kingston, Ont.), Violent Betty (Saskatoon, Sask.), Atmora (Windsor, Ont.), Juliet Ruin (Edmonton, AB.), Scythia (Calgary, Alta.), Massive Scar Era (Vancouver, B.C./Cairo, Egypt) plus many more. To hear music from the bands check out the free digital compilation album available from the Metalocalypstick Fest’s Bandcamp page.

As the self-taught vocalist for Vancouver-based heavy metal band, Anarcheon, Kinney has first-hand knowledge of what it is like to be a woman in the typically male-dominated genre. After finding a lack of female based metal festivals for her band to apply to, Kinney decided to produce an event that would bring people with similar views and musical tastes together to experience a unique event in western Canada. Kinney notes that although metal music is still dominated by men this festival celebrates the diversity of men and women, “People like to say women in metal aren’t a big deal anymore and that we are all the same.  I want to showcase all these ladies and celebrate the differences of men and women rather than pretend we are all equal. Truth is we are different why can’t we celebrate that?”

An important part of Metalocalypstick is giving back to the community as a non-profit organization dedicated to helping bands with a heavy focus who also have female members. All proceeds are donated to local charities including Girls Rock Camp and the Vancouver Rape Relief and Women’s Shelter.  An independent band, selected by Metalocalypstick Fest judges, is also sponsored.
