No matter how many new albums come our way for the rest of 2017, none of them will beat Motherfucker Superior for best title of the year. The cover of the album by Nunchucker also rams its point home with the subtlety of a sledgehammer. I personally couldn’t comment on whether it’s the best or worst cover ever (best).

The genesis of Nunchucker can be traced back to 2006 when the band’s two main protagonists, Matt Lovell and Chris Tate, met at a club in Camden, London. The pair started to write songs together while Chris was still engaged in his own electro punk band, Trash Money.

This arrangement continued up to 2015 when Trash Money more or less folded and Matt and Chris decided to revisit the songs they wrote together and take Nunchucker forward.

And so Motherf*cker Superior was born. Out February 3 on Tragic Records in the UK, the album consists of 11 tracks of rock ‘n’ roll, dripping with sleaze.

The songs on this album are pretty basic affairs with no airs or graces which, I suspect, is exactly how Nunchucker intended it to be. All tracks are heavily riff-based, whether it be on the rock ‘n’ roll of the opener “The Sweet Smell Of Rock n Roll” or the more bluesy “Coffin Nails”.

The vocals have that smoky quality a la Spike of The Quireboys and the whole feel of the band is similar to that of their compatriots.

Nunchucker claims to be all about the riffs (check) and melodic solos. These solos were hard to come by until the seventh track, “Drink B4U Think”, when we are treated to an absolute pearler. Long, musical and fitting, this solo is the true highlight of the album for me.

After the first listen I thought that Nunchucker were all about being good time Charlies, only bothered about boozing and shagging but they do have more depth to them than that. “Get Free” is a good example of that. A nice slower intense affair, showcasing the band’s talents and with a more serious story to tell.

If you come across Motherf*cker Superior, give it a chance – you’ll grow to love its catchy riffs, cool feel and sleazy delivery.

Nunchucker is rock ‘n’ roll to their dirty core and this album reflects that perfectly.
