Power Metal rockers The Unity released their first album on May 5th via Steamhammer / SPV. The new group was founded by Gamma Ray members Michael Ehré (drums) and Henjo Richter (guitar) and rounded out with powerful Italian vocalist Gianba Manenti, guitarist Stef E, bassist Jogi Sweers and keyboardist Sascha Onnen. Richter was part of the Hamburg power metal outfit for some twenty years, while Ehré played with artists like Firewind, Uli Jon Roth, and Unisonic prior to joining Gamma Ray in 2012.
The band spent 18 months focused on writing and recording this debut, with all six members contributing to its powerful sound. In January 2017, the band released a lyric video for the song “Rise and Fall” which is the lead off track from The Unity. The song explodes out of the gate with a wall of anthemic guitars and vocals. The song has a smooth verse which gives way to an aggressive pre-chorus and huge chorus. A great start to the album and from there transitions into what sounds like an interesting interview before a cranking riff leading into “No More Lies.”
The album is full of an interesting and addictive mixture of larger-than-life guitar riffs, lush vocals, and bombastic choruses. Songs like “Never Forget” almost has a Pop Rock vibe, and I said almost because, don’t worry, the kick-ass guitar riffing going on takes care of that. Still the song possesses many pop qualities. Other standout tracks from this stellar debut are “Redeemer” and “God of Temptation.”
Aside from the great musicianship that permeates this album throughout, I like the idea of a Power Metal band who keeps in mind the melody and the song, without losing the aggressive edge that I like in my rock music. In other words, the album is melodic with great players and heavy guitars. Just the way I like it!
This is a rocking start to The Unity’s career. Do yourself a favor and go check this one out.
As always no matter your personal taste, please get out there and support live and recorded rock music.
