Texas Hippie Coalition Concert Review 2017Writer’s Note:  My camera had a major settings issue and all pics from the show came nowhere near the glory of pics I took at High Elevation last year.  Therefore I have included them instead. We do have video at the end of the article from the great Rockin’ Ron Runyon and more on our YouTube channel HERE.

“I don’t care what Manson said, Rock ain’t dead, it’s just in rehab.”

Texas Hippie Coalition (THC) destroyed Buffalo Rose in Golden, CO on Friday, April 14th, 2017.

If you haven’t heard THC their sound is best described by the band itself: ZZ Top is a baby raised by Pantera. And that is absolutely a sitcom I would watch.  “4 Cowboys from Hell and a Baby.” I’d check it out just to see Phil Anselmo change a bearded baby’s diaper.  Dimebag (RIP) could be part of the cast as a hologram and the Dio hologram could make guest appearances. Brilliant.

Texas Hippie Coalition Concert Review 2017THC is fronted by a larger than life personality:  Big Daddy Rich.  He packs a pocketknife on stage and a shotgun mic stand. He is the self-proclaimed “King of Texas” and they claim to be the best “Red Dirt Metal” band on Earth which is accurate since they made up that term. And they are tons of fun live. The band never stops moving.

BDR is 3-D physically but one dimensional in his onstage banter always mentioning that he drinks too much Waylon Whiskey and Willie Weed.  That’s not a shot. Bands are also a brand.  They have built a loyal following by releasing five albums of consistent material; when you want a hit of THC you know what you’re going to get.  If you want to dive into their catalog, start with “River Bottom”, “Turn it Up” and “Fallen Angel” from their latest release.

Texas Hippie Coalition Concert Review 2017Here’s their setlist.  They played damn near 20 songs to a packed, captivated audience that raised their horns in the air on cue.  See them live when they hit your town. Grab some whiskey, drink it from a chalice and turn it up people!
